This is the last will and testament
of me Anthony Compere of Stow in the Wold in the county of
Gloucester Surgeon who am at the time of making hereof of sound
Mind and understanding (Thanks be to God therefore) First I give
Devise and bequeath unto my Brother John Compere all that and
those my FreeholdNote 2 MessuagesNote 3 Lands Tenements and HereditamentsNote 4
Situate lying and being in Broadwell in the said county of Gloucester
which bought and purchased by my father and self of
William Thayler of London Oilman deceased to hold to him and
his heirs for ever but subject nevertheless and liable and chargeable
to and with the payment of one annuity or Rent Charge of ten
pounds a year clear of all Taxes and Deductions whatsoever
which said yearly Sum I have agreed to pay to William Beard of
Iccomb in the County of Worcester Yeoman and his Assigns by
half yearly payments during the Term of his natural Life and if
it shall happen that the said Annuity or [blotted out and filled] Rent Charge shall
be behind or unpaid in part or in the whole by the space of three
Months next after the same shall become due and payable (the
same being lawfully demanded) that then and so often and in such
case it shall and be lawful to and for the said William Beard
or his Assigns into and upon all or any part of the aforesaid
premises chargeable therewith to enter and distrainNote 5 and such
Distress and Distresses to detain keep and dispose of as he shall
think fit until he shall be fully satisfied and paid all
Arrearages of the said annuity with the cost and charges in
and about the making keeping and disposing thereof Also I
give and devise to my said brother John Compere all those
my other Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments with
the Appurtenances also situate lying and being in Broadwell
aforesaid which I bought and purchased of John Wells and
which were heretofore the Estate and Inhabitance of Capt.
John Barber To Hold to my said Brother John Compere and
his Assigns for and during the term of his natural Life
Also I give and devise to my said Brother John Compere his heirs
and assigns for ever all those my other messauges
and tenements with their appurtenances situate lying and
being in Stow on Wold aforesaid which I bought and
purchased of one William Mince Also I give and devise unto
my Servant Ann Bolton my messauge or tenement in Stow
aforesaid with the appurtenances wherein William Osmond
now dwells To Hold to her and her assigns for and during the
Term of her natural life Also I give and devise unto my
said Servant Ann Bolton for her life one annuity or yearly
Rent of twenty pounds per annum to be issuing and payable
out of all those my messuages lands and hereditaments
situate lying and being in Donington in the said county of
Gloucester to be paid by half yearly payments clear of all
Deductions the first of the said payments to begin and made
at such of the feast days of Saint Michael the Archangel and
the Annunciation of the blessed Virgin Mary as shall happen
next after my decease and if it shall happen that the said
Annuity or Rent Charge of twenty pounds shall be behind or
unpaid in part or in the whole by the space of three
months next after either of the said feast days or times
of payment (the same being lawfully demanded) that then
and so often and in such case it shall and may be lawful to
and for the said Ann Bolton and her assigns into and upon
all or any part of my said messauges lands and hereditaments
at Donington aforesaid chargeable therewith to enter into and
upon and distrain and such distress and distresses to detain
keep and dispose of as she or they shall think fit until she
or they shall be fully satisfied and paid. All arrearages of the
said annuity with the costs and charges in and about those
making keeping and disposing thereof Also I give and devise
to Leonard Hayward of Stow aforesaid Apothecary my house
in Stow aforesaid which I purchased of Edward Rose To Hold
to him and his assigns for and during term of his natural life
upon condition that he and they do and shall keep the same in
good and sufficient tenantable repair and so leave the same
at the decease of the said Leonard Hayward. Also I give and
devise unto Stephen Jones of Stow aforesaid
and to his heirs and assigns for ever all those my two little
Messuages or tenements with the appurtenances situate in Stow
aforesaid in a certain place there called Hoofhanis Backside.
Also I give and devise all the rest residue and remainder of all
and every my messuages lands tenements and hereditaments
with their appurtenances situate lying being in the several
Parishes and places of Winchcomb, Corn Deane, Wescote, Donington,
Lower Swell, Stow on the Wold or elsewhere in the said county
of Gloucester (not by me hereinbefore disposed of) unto William
Wanley of Eyford in the said county of Gloucester Esquire my
said brother John Compere and to my brother in law Jervis
Austin of Cirencester in the said county of Gloucester Gentleman
and to their heirs To for and upon the several uses Trusts
and purposes and to the intent to support the contingent uses
Estates and Remainders hereinafter limited in and upon the
same for being defeated or destroyed but nevertheless in
trust to permit my Grand Nephew Thomas Blizard
of Stow on the Wold aforesaid and his assigns when he shall
attain his age of twenty one years to have receive and take
the rents issues and profits thereof during his natural life
and from and after the determination of that estate then
I give and devise the same messuages lands tenements
and hereditaments unto my said Trustees and their heirs
to preserve the contingent remainders in manner aforesaid
and then to continue remain and be unto the first second
third and fourth and all and every other the son and sons of
the body of my said Grand Nephew Thomas Blizard
successively in Tail MaleNote 6 as they and every of them shall
be in seniority of age and priority birth and to the heirs of the
body of such son and sons lawfully issuing and for default
of such issue then in trust to permit my niece Mary
Compere to receive and take the rents issues and profits
thereof during the term of her natural life with the like
remainder to her issue in Tail Male and for default of
such issue then to permit my neice Ann Compere to receive
and take the rents issues and profits thereof during her
natural life with like remainder to her issue in Tail Male
and in default of such issue then to permit and suffer my
niece Elizabeth Compere to receive and take the rents
issues and profits thereof during her natural life with the
like remainder to her issue in Tail Male and for default
of such issue then to permit and suffer my niece Ann Biam
to receive and take the rents issues and profits thereof
during her natural life with the like remainder to her issue
in Tail Male and for default of such issue then to remain
continue and be unto my own right heirs for ever
provided always and my Will and Desire is that my said
Trustees or the major part of them shall or may let and
devise all or any part of the aforesaid premises to any
person or persons whatsoever for the best rent that can
be got for the same for any term or number of year
not exceeding the time of my said Grand Nephew attaining
his said age of twenty one years so that there be a
counterpart or counterparts of such lease or leases only
executed and so that the tenant or tenants thereof be therein
and thereby restrained from committing any manner of wast[e?]
And further my will is that my said trustees and their heirs
shall and may have power to consent and agree to exchange
lands and to make inclosures in the common fields in the several
parishes where my said estates lye if such agreement with
other the landholders of the said parishes shall be thought
convenient and beneficial And my will and desire further is that
my said Trustees and their heirs shall and may from time to
time receive the Rents issues and profits of all my said estates
until my said Grand Nephew Thomas Blizard shall attain
his age of twenty one years and pay and dispose of the same
as is hereinafter directed (that is to say) that they my said
Trustees and their heirs do and shall pay the sum of
twenty pounds yearly out of the same for or towards the
Education of my said Grand Nephew until he shall attain
his age of eighteen years. And if they should think proper
to send him to be educated at either of the universities
then that they do and shall pay him thereout the sum of
fifty pounds yearly until he shall attain his said age of
twenty one years. And I hereby will and direct that the
receipts of my said Grand Nephew notwithstanding his
minority shall be good discharge to my said Trustees for the
same And so hereat I have lately purchased of my cousins
Anthony Compere of Market Harborough in the county of
Leicester and his brother Robert Compere their several
estates in remainder for the term of their natural lives
in certain lands tenements and hereditaments lying and
being in the parishes of Winchcomb Broadwell Maugeresbury
in the county of Gloucester and in Antsdeane in the county
of Worcester which were devised to them in and by the last
will and testament of my late brother Thomas Compere
of Saint Clements Danes in the county of Middlesex deceased
Now I hereby give and devise the said estates in remainder
in case they shall fall into the possession of my assigns by
virtue or consequence of the said purchase to the before
mentioned Trustees and their heirs upon the several uses
and trusts hereinafter mentioned (that is to say) In trust that
they my said trustees and their heirs do and shall place
out at interest on real or government securities the moneys
to arise from the rents issues and profits of my said
estates in remainder and also the rents issues and profits
of all my other estates herein before devised to or in trust
for my said Grand Nephew Thomas Blizard and not bereby
otherwise disposed of by me until my said Grand Nephew shall
attain his said age of twenty one years and when he shall
have attained such age then that they my said trustees do and
shall permit and suffer my said Grand Nephew to receive and
take the rents issues and profits thereof during his natural
Life and after his decease do and shall permit my Niece Mary
Compere to receive and take the Rents Issues and Profits
Hereof During her Life and after he decease do and shall
permit my Niece Ann Compere to receive and take the
Rents Issues and Profits thereof during her Life and after her
Decease I give the remainder of the Term for the Lives
aforesaid of and in the said premises unto my Niece Elizabeth
Compere her Heirs and Assigns and my Will farther is that my
said Trustees and their Heirs shall permit and suffer my said
Grand Nephew Thomas Blizard and when he shall attain his
Said Age of twenty one years to receive and take the Interest
of the Moneys which shall arise from the rents and profits
of my said Estates before my said Nephew shall attain his
age of twenty one years and which shall be placed out at
Interest as before directed during his natural Life and after
His Decease I give the said Moneys to the Issue Male of my
said Grand Nephew and in Default of such Issue I give the said
Moneys to my said three Nieces Mary Ann and Elizabeth
Compere equally to be divided between them Share and Share
alike Also I give and bequeath to Elizabeth Parker of Stow
on the Wold aforesaid Widow and Inn-holder the Sum of five
Pounds a year clear of all Deductions to be paid her by half
yearly Payments during her natural Life the first payment to
be made upon the first Lady Day or upon the first Michaelmas
Day which shall happen near after my Decease and my Will is
that my said Trustees and their Heirs shall pay her and her
Assigns the said Sum of five pounds out of the Rents and
Profits of my said real Estates so to them devised in Trust as
aforesaid Also I give to my Cousins Anthony Compere and
Robert Compere of Market Harborough the Sum of ten pounds
a year to be paid them during their Natural Lives when the
Estates I lately purchased of them shall come into the possession
of my Heirs or Assigns but I direct that no payment thereof
be made to either of them until my Assigns shall have quiet
Possession of the said Estates by Virtue of their respective Grants
thereof to me my Heirs or Assigns Also I give to the Revd. Mr.
Richard Hippisley Minister of Stow aforesaid ten Guineas to buy
him a Ring Also I give to the Churchwarden and Overseers of
the Poor of the Town of Stow on the Wold aforesaid and their
Sucessors the Sum of one hundred pounds to laid out in the
Purchase of Lands and I hereby Direct the Interest and produce
thereof to be given yearly to the said poor of Stow sometime
about Christmas Also I give to my Niece Ann Biam and
her Daughter Ann Biam one hundred pounds each Also I
give to my Cousin George Compere of the City of London the
Sum of twenty pounds Also I give to James Williams of the Town
of Stow aforesaid Shoemaker thirty pounds Also I give to
William Slatter of Bourton on the Water in the said County of
Gloucester forty pounds Also I give to Andrew Hathaway of
Broadwell aforesaid Labourer ten pounds And I hereby order all
the Legacies given by me to be paid one year after my Decease
Also I give to each of my said Trustees twenty pounds in
Consideration of their taking on them the Execution of the Trusts
hereby reposed in them and I will and wish that my said Trustees
their Heirs and Assigns do and shall retain and keep to themselves
out of my personal Estate all such necessary Costs Charges
and Expenses which they or either of them my sustain or be
put unto in the Execution of this my Will and of the Trusts
aforesaid Also I give to my said Trustees and their Heirs the
Sum of two hundred pounds to be by them placed out at
In Trust that they do and shall pay the Interest thereof to my
Niece Mary Blizard until my said Grand Nephew Thos. Blizard
shall arrive at his said age of twenty one years and when he
shall have attained such age Then In Trust that my said
Trustees pay the said principal Sum to two hundred pounds to
him my said Nephew he my said Nephew paying to the said
Mary Blizard his Mother the Interest thereof for her Life
But if my said Nephew shall dye before he attain such age
then I give the said principal Sum of two hundred pounds
unto my said three Heirs Mary Ann and Elizabeth Compere
they paying to the said Mary Blizard the Interest thereof
for her Life Also I give and bequeath to my said Trustees and their
Heirs all my Goods furniture and Household Stuff now being
in my House at Broadwell aforesaid which I keep in my own
Possession and wherein William Ivins now dwells In Trust for
my said Grand Nephew Thomas Blizard to be by themselves
delivered to him at his age of twenty one years but if he
shall happen to dye before that time, then I give and bequeath
the same to my said three Nieces Mary Ann and Elizabeth
equally to be divided between them and further my Will is
that all the Goods and furniture that shall be in my House
Corn Deane in the said County of Gloucester shall
remain there and go along with my said House as Hevis
Loom and my Will and Desire is that my said Trustees
shall be answerable for their own respective Act or Acts
only and not for the Act or Acts of the other or others of
them And my further Will and Desire is that my said
Trustees or the Survivors or Survivor of them and his and
their Heirs do and shall from time to time and at all times
as often as occasion may require make use of and employ
James Knight of Stow on the Wold aforesaid Gent. as
their Attorney and Solicitor in transacting and managing the
Business and matters that my happen and rise couching
this my Will and the Trusts herein contained and moreover
I give and bequeath to my said three Nieces Mary Ann and
Elizabeth Compere the Sum of two hundred pounds a piece
and do make my said three Nieces residuary Legatees of
this my Will and I hereby give unto them the said Mary
Ann and Elizabeth Compere all the rest and residue of my
personal Estate whatsoever equally to be divided between
them share and share alike and if any or other of them
shall happen to dye before she or they shall receive the same
then I give the Share or Shares of such of them so Dying to the
other or others of them and Lastly I make ordain constitute and
appoint my said Trustees William Wanley John Compere and
Jervis Austin joint Executors of this my Will upon the Trusts
aforesaid hereby revoking all former Wills by me made In
Witness whereof I the said Anthony Compere the Testator have
hereunto set my Hand and Seal this eight and twentieth Day
of July in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and
sixty - Anthony Compere -Signed Sealed published and
Declared by the said Testator as and for his last Will and
Testament in the presence of us who at his Request and in
his presence and in the presence and sight of each other so
have set our Names as Witnesses hereunto - John Ellis -
Martin Shayler - John Knight - James Knight

I Anthony Compere of Stow on the Wold
in the County of Gloucester Surgeon do this eighteenth Day
of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven
hundred and sixty two make and publish this my Codicil to
my last Will and Testament in manner following (that is to
say) I give to the Widow Ivins of Broadwell in the said
County the Sum of ten pounds I give to the Revd. Mr, Simo-
Paget of Stow on the Wold aforesaid the Sum of ten pounds
to buy him a Ring Also I give to George Thomas Frances
and Jane Sons and Daughters of Hercules Vide of Condicott
in the said County of Gloucester by Katharin his wife the
sum of ten pounds each Also I give to James Knight of Stow
on the Wold aforesaid Gentleman the Sum of forty Guineas
and I hereby order all the Legacies herein and in my Will
mentioned and therein and thereby given by me to be paid
within one year next after my Decease Also I give and
Devise all those my Messuages or Tenements Cottages
Arable Meadow and pasture grounds Lands Commons and
Premises with their and every of their Rights Members and
Appurtenances situate lying and being in Condicott Longburrow
and Swell in the said County of Gloucester which I lately
bought and purchased of Hercules Vide of Condicott abovesaid
Yeoman To for and upon the several uses Trusts Intents and
Purposes as in and by my last Will and Testament I have
given and devised therein All the rest residue and remainder
of my Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments with
the Appurtenances situate lying and being in the several
Parishes and places of Winchcomb Corn Deane Prescote
Donnington Lower Swell Stow on the Wold or elsewhere in
the said County of Gloucester (not by me hereinbefore
disposed of) unto William Wanley of Eyford in the said County
of Gloucester Esq. my Brother John Compere and my Brother
in Law Jervis Austin of Cirencester in the said County of
Gloucester Gentleman and to their Heirs To for and upon the
several uses Trusts and purposes and to the Intent to

Compere to receive and take the Rents Issues and Profits
thereof during her natural Life with the like Remainder to her
Issue in Tail Male and for Default of such Issue then to permit
my Niece Ann Compere to receive and take the Rents Issues
and Profits thereof during her natural Life with the like
Remainder to her Issue in Tail Male and for Default of
such Issue Then to permit and suffer my Niece Elizabeth
Compere to receive and take the rents Issues and Profits
thereof during her natural Life with the like Remainder to
her Issue in Tail Male and for Default of such Issue then
to remain continue and be unto my own Right Heirs for
ever And whereas in and by my said Will it is mentioned
that in Default of Issue of my Niece Elizabeth Compere then
to permit and suffer my Niece Ann Biam to receive and
take the Rents Issues and Profits thereof during her
natural Life with the like remainder to her Issue in Tail
Male and for Default of Issue then to remain continue and
be unto my own Right Heirs for ever Now I do by this my
Codicil from and immediately after the natural Life of my
Niece Elizabeth Compere in Default of Issue Tail Male of
her Body give and Devise the said Estates abovesaid and to
remain continue and be unto my right Heirs forever
and that my Niece Ann Biam or her Issue shall have no
Right Title or Interest of in or to the said Messuages Lands
Tenements or Hereditaments either in this my Codicil or Will
before mentioned or to any part thereof and that she and
her Issue in Tail or otherwise shall be utterly debarred and
excluded from receiving any Benefit profit or advantage
thereof and therefrom And I do hereby order and desire my said
Trustees and their Heirs that they will pay the Sum of twenty
pounds already mentioned in my said Will for and towards the
Education of my said Grand Nephew until he shall attain his
age of fourteen years instead of eighteen years as already
mentioned in my said Will And Whereas John Staite of Condicott
abovesaid Gentleman is indebted to me in a considerable Sum of
Money and for securing the payment thereof with Interest the
said John Staite hath mortgaged all that his Messuage or
Tenement Lands and Premises with their and every of their appurtenances
together with the Manor of Condicott aforesaid and perpetual
AdvowsonNote 7 of the Church of Condicott aforesaid Now I do hereby
order and desire my said Trustees and their Heirs that if the
said John Staite or his Representatives or any one claiming
under him will sell the said Estate last above mentioned that
they my said Trustees and their Heirs will buy or purchase
the same at as reasonable a price they can and in case of
the purchase abovesaid to be made that they my said Trustees
and their Heirs will convey assign and settle the same
Premises to for and upon the said Thomas Blizard and his
Issue in Tail Male and the Issue of my said three Nieces
Mary Ann and Elizabeth Compere and their Issue in Tail Male
as aforesaid and in default of such Issue then to for and upon
my Right Heirs for ever according to the true Intent and
meaning of this my Codicil and Will before mentioned and to
and for none other use Trust Intent or purpose whatsoever
and Lastly it is my desire that this present Codicil be annexed
to and made a part of my last Will and Testament In Witness
whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the Day and
Year first above written - Anthony Compere - Signed Sealed
and published by the said Anthony Compere as a Codicil to be
annexed to his Will in the presence of - John Ellis - Martin Shaylar -
John Knight

On the nineteenth Day of December in the Year of our
Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty four administration
(with the Will annexed) of the Goods Chattels anda Credits of
Anthony Compere late of Stow on the Wold in the County of
Gloucester Deceased was granted to Mary Compere Spinster
Ann Knight formerely Compere (Wife of Richard Widmore Knight)
and Elizabeth Compere Spinster the Nieces of the said Deceased
and residuary Legatees named in the said Will For that William
Wanley John Compere and Jervis Austin) the Executors In Trust
named in the said Will respectively Dyed in the Lifetime of the
Testator having been firsts sworn by Commission duly to
administer E?.

On the 22nd April 1830 -
Administration of the Goods, Chattels,
and Credits of Anthony Compere late
of Stow on the Wold in the County of
Gloucester deceased left inadministered
by Mary Compere Spinster Ann Knight
formerly Compere (Wife of Richard
Widmore Knight) and Elizabeth
Compere Spinster respectively deceased
which living the Nieces of the Deceased and
the Residuary Legatees named in his Will
was granted to Daniel Henning of
Lincoln Inn Fields in the County of
Middlesex Esquire as a person for that
purpose named by and on the part and
behalf of Ann Marshall of Allesley in
the County of Warwick Spinster limited
so far only as concerns all the Right
Title and Interest of him the said
Anthony Compere deceased in and to
the Sum of eight hundred and seventy
Pounds ten Shillings Old South Sea
annuities now standing in the Names
of Benjamin Bliss deceased and the said
Anthony Compere and the Dividend
and Interest now due or to grow due
thereon for the purpose of attending
the Orders of the High Court of
Chancery and all benefits and
advantage to be had received and
taken therefrom but no further or
otherwise or in any other manner
whatsoever, having been first-sworn
duly to administer / William
Wanley John Compere and Jervis
Austin the Executors in Trust named
in the said Will having died
in the lifetime of the Testator/
