These graves are in the White Oak Cemetery, Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. An inscription on the side of Ebeneezer's stone reads:
Pioneer Baptist missionary in Western Arkansas and Indian Territory, Confederate Chaplain, founder of Buckner College, Witcherville, Arkansas
On 9 April 2009, a tornado killed three people and devasted the town of Mena, including extensive damage to White Oak Cemetery. Photographs of the aftermath may be viewed on www.menatornado.com. Scroll down to the White Oak Cemetery selection to see the pictures. Picture 173 shows what appears to be two headstones on the right of the image that have the correct shapes and orientations of those of Josephine Mullins and E. L. Compere. Our hopes are that their stones were not toppled or crushed by the devastion.

In Mayfield, Graves County, Kentucky, we found a survey of the Russell-Hocker Cemetery in the public library; and followed the directions to the location. We inquired at a house which seemed to be the proper distance along Meridian Road; and we were given directions to the cemetery about one-quarter mile within that property, and given permission to visit it.Levina Russell Headstone

We travelled to Grayson County, Texas to find the graves of Jan's great-great-grandparents. According to internet sources, one was in a rural graveyard and we knew the other to be in a cemetery in the town of Sherman. The listing had given a road intersection as the location of the rural cemetery northwest of Pottsboro, Texas. We found the intersection, but could not see a cemetery. We pulled into a nearby driveway to be greeted by the house's occupant. He told us that there was an old cemetery in the woods about a quarter of a mile south of the house across the road. No one was home there. The road ran on two sides of the property; and as we drove along the east side, we could see the wooded area to the west where the cemetery must be. We pulled off the road next to a gate. There did not appear to be any livestock in the pasture, so we climbed the gate and headed for the woods. Inside the woods, which was of mostly pine trees, there were broken and prone headstones scattered everywhere. We brushed away pine needles on some whose lettering faced up. One of us remarked that we could turn them over for hours and never find it; and then there it was! It almost seemed as if Alex guided us to his record. We propped the headstone up against a tree and photographed it; and then headed to Sherman. We stopped at the public library to see if there were cemetery records to help us find the other grave. We were directed to the office on the cemetery grounds. There we inquired, and the person there consulted a card file, and then pointed to a map giving us the location, 8th Street, Lot 6. West Hill is as well maintained as the Brogdon Cemetery is neglected.

When we arrived at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Popular Springs Road, Whitfield County, Georgia, there were two men in the cemetery. We inquired about the Thomas Crow graves, and Henry Crow, who shares the bloodline with Jan, showed us the way. Visiting graves can give you a connection with those no longer here, but sometimes you can meet a live cousin.

On our visit the original headstones had deteriorated so badly as to be almost unreadable in person and even worse in a photograph. A misguided attempt to clean the headstones had been made, which accelerated the deterioration. We came away with photos of these latter day additions.

Since Thurma was listed on the 1900 census, it is unlikely that she died in 1899 as the headstone suggests. The stone was probably erected years later and the information was confused.
